Well Designed Sleeping Environments – Bedrooms

The bedroom is your most private space in the entire house – Your daily getaway from the world. Also, it is the place where you spend time resting. While it is one of the most important rooms in the house, significant thought is not given to it while designing it. In fact any good interior designer will not only focus on design & layout but also on the temperature, noise levels and mattress selection.

Given our busy lifestyles, most of us spend significant time in our bedrooms, especially on the 5 working days of the week. Therefore, it is essential to put in a lot of thought on how you are going to use the bedroom and then consider what the essential furniture items that you require.

While beds, side tables & wardrobes go without saying, you may want to incorporate a study table or a TV Unit or an independent dresser or a coffee chair & table, etc. depending on what the bedroom means to you and how you will be using it. The bedroom should be a reflection of your personality and should provide you with comfort and ease.

Today, we will discuss how one can choose the essential items like the bed, the wardrobe and side tables. First thing that one needs to keep in mind is the size of the room and the position of the windows and no. of free walls.

Before buying any furniture in the bedroom, it is important to determine the layout of the furniture with respect to the size, free walls and your personal likes & beliefs.

Most bedrooms in India have a window taking up one wall. If your bedroom is long then you can consider keeping the wardrobe directly in front of the bed. However, if not, you will need to use the free wall on one side of the bed. The bed can be placed against a free wall but it can also be placed in front of a window.

Choosing the type of wardrobe can be a matter of function or style.  If there is less space between the bed and the wardrobe, it would be best to go in for a sliding wardrobe. If you have enough space, you can go in for a hinge door wardrobe or a bi-fold hinge wardrobe. We would always suggest tall wardrobe as it makes the bedroom look sleeker rather than breaking up the wardrobe and creating overhead storage units.

If you are placing the bed in front of a window, you might want to consider a low bed or a bed with a reclining headboard. Both of these will give you unobstructed access to the window. However, if the window is west facing, there are chances that rain may enter through, and therefore necessary precaution needs to be taken.

If you have closet space, you can consider a walk-in wardrobe with an elaborate dresser. This is definitely functional as well as stylish.

Side tables or night stands are very important in a bedroom. Before considering the design, consider the usage and storage needs. A 2 drawer side table can look bulky but can give you more storage; whereas, a single drawer and glass shelf can lend lightness to the room.

If you do not have space for a dresser, just use the back of the main bedroom door to mount a full length mirror and use one of the drawers within your wardrobe or bathroom vanity for storage.

Another important aspect in any bedroom is the flooring and lighting. We suggest breaking the monotony of the room, by going for different tiles from the rest of the house. Our take would be on nice wooden flooring as it exudes warmth and coziness.

Consider wardrobe lights or goose neck reading lamps on headboards as they are hassle free, cost effective solutions that provide functionality without disturbing others who share the room.

Lastly, we suggest neutral color paint shades for the bedroom. Instead, add character and a dash of color with vibrant accessories, wall paper, artwork and smart furnishing. Also, tasteful bedside lamps whether wall mounted, pendant or table top, adds elegance to any room.

Allowing for the variables in your sleep environs and enhancing the space to convey character, comfort and functionality will go a long way in creating your own personal haven to unwind and energize in
